With construction nearing the halfway mark at a large new shopping plaza in Barrie’s south end, there are hints and signs of what businesses will be opening up there this summer.
The plaza at 315, 319 and 323 Mapleview Dr. W., just east of Essa Road, has been under construction for most of the past year, and some of the tenants are letting future customers know they will be opening their doors before long.
What a Bagel, an eatery, bakery and catering business, is one of those businesses, proclaiming a summer opening with signs plastered in their front window.
Another is a Jersey Mike’s sub shop, which is an American restaurant chain. It will be Barrie’s second location, with the other on Bayfield Street.
The largest retail building in the plaza is painted in what appears to be the bright green colours of the FreshCo grocery store chain.
Adjoining the grocery story is another store, with little hint of what it will become other than what looks like a window decoration with a design and colour scheme similar to a Dollerama dollar store.
Beyond these stores, most of the remaining vacant shops house no hints as to what will be setting up shop inside them.
According to construction drawings submitted to the City of Barrie, there are 11 units in the plaza, with enough parking for 203 vehicles.

A large new shopping plaza on Mapleview Drive West, just east of Essa Road, in Barrie is aiming to open its first doors this summer, including what appears to be a FreshCo grocery store, a sub shop and a bagel eatery.
